Part of a residential development intended to breathe new life into a struggling neighborhood, the Charles H. Shaw Company decided to implement the sixth phase of the project to accommodate additional residents. Pepper had already proven we could complete the job efficiently without sacrificing quality on two of the previous phases.  This project — six apartment buildings totaling 60,000 square feet — is the latest project in a partnership between Pepper, the Charles H. Shaw Company, Sears and the City of Chicago over the past three decades.

Rebuilding a Community

When the project first started in the 1980s, the North Lawndale community had been under-served and neglected for decades. Working with Charles Shaw, Pepper has renovated and restored many parts of the original Sears headquarters campus, with a focus on new housing, commercial development and community service.

Results that Matter

This is the third apartment complex Pepper has completed in North Lawndale. The two apartment complexes we constructed previously are both at 100% capacity — an inspiring sign that things are improving for the residents of North Lawndale.

Partners for North Lawndale

We have been collaborating with The Shaw Company and the City of Chicago to achieve this vision to transform the Homan Square community since the late 1990s. Together, we have renovated and restored many parts of the old Sears campus; creating a community center in 2000 and turning the power house into the award-winning Charles H. Shaw Technology & Learning Center in 2009.
