Connections

Reflecting on 2023, our team not only built projects; we built connections. Building is a collaborative effort, and our connections go beyond the built world to encompass the relationships we forge, the partnerships we create and the bridges we create across our industry and within our own teams.

I am pleased to present Pepper’s 2023 annual review, which explores the connections between construction and the communities we serve.

Living our values

Integrity is the foundation of any successful endeavor. Beyond contracts and agreements, we are committed to delivering quality work and not only meeting, but exceeding expectations on every project, for every client we serve. Our values reflect this deeply held commitment, and they shape how we steward our clients’ resources and value our team members.

One of our key values is Safety. In October, Pepper proactively transitioned from traditional hard hats to Type II construction helmets on jobsites to improve safety and reduce the risk of traumatic brain injuries. We consistently adopt new technologies that make our people safer and more productive, so this was the logical next step to protect our team members.

Strengthening team bonds

Our team is a closely-knit community. We have enjoyed being back in the office together and we continue to elevate the state of our workplaces as healthy, modern environments where our teams can connect.

Our Cincinnati office was recently recognized with ENR’s 2023 Midwest Sustainability award and the 2023 Alloy Development Company Ronald Shallick Economic Development Award.

Cincy Team

Our teams enjoyed attending the ENR Best of the Midwest awards ceremony, where we were fortunate enough to be recognized as winners in three categories: UI Health Specialty Care Building - Healthcare, Pritzker Military Archives Center - Cultural/Worship and the Pepper Cincinnati Office - Sustainability. Congratulations to all three of these project teams, and thank you to the Engineering News-Record for a great event!

We opened a new office in Des Plaines, Illinois for our 365 Equipment & Supply business  and space that will also serve Pepper Construction. We also did a ribbon cutting for  the completed Phase 1 renovation of our 643 Orleans location in downtown Chicago and look forward to Phase 2 beginning early this year.

Together, we celebrated Construction Inclusion Week with its goal to unite general contractors, subcontractors and suppliers as we work to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in our industry. Pepper was an event Ambassador this year and hosted daily activities for everyone across the company to get involved and advance our efforts.

Data-driven performance

The correlation between data and decisions runs through every phase of construction. This year, we invested in new technologies that will contribute to the value our preconstruction and estimating teams deliver, enabling clients to make better data-informed decisions.

We advanced our connection between data and 3D virtual models, prototyping a digital twin for several of our offices. These models provide real-time data on building performance, validating the strategies employed and providing critical insights into operational efficiency. These prototypes will form the foundation for delivering digital twins to clients in the future, a growing trend we are seeing in our industry.

A digital twin of Pepper’s Cincinnati office provides real-time sensor data on building performance.

Long after a project is completed, the building or space impacts our environment and the surrounding community. We continue introducing clients to five common sense strategies that create operational efficiencies while drawing down carbon from the environment. This year we established an Environmental, Sustainability and Governance (ESG) framework for the company and are tracking statistics to measure the impact of our corporate responsibility. In turn, this investment positions Pepper to help our clients with their own ESG journey.

As you explore this Annual Review, we invite you to reflect on the connections between the built world and your day-to-day activities. It is what makes Pepper not just a builder, but a community of dedicated individuals working together to transform tomorrow for future generations.

Thank you for your continued partnership, for the trust you place in our team and the invaluable connections we share.
