Pepper completed a 20,000-square-foot renovation of unexcavated crawl space beneath Good Shepherd Hospital’s existing bed tower in Barrington, Illinois, transforming the area into a fully operational production lab and production pharmacy for Advocate Aurora Health. Located directly below the hospital’s ICU and other critical departments, the project required careful infection control and the use of electric excavation equipment and prefabricated MEP racks to minimize noise and disruption throughout construction. The new space included a mechanical room with an air handling unit, new electrical infrastructure and an exterior building riser to manage pharmacy exhaust.
Delivered through an Integrated Form of Agreement (IFOA), the project united Advocate Aurora Health, Anderson Mikos Architects, IMEG Corporation, Martin Petersen and Jamerson & Bauwens around shared goals for cost, schedule, safety and prefabrication. Early involvement in the design phase allowed Pepper’s virtual construction team to laser scan the space and coordinate MEP systems against actual existing conditions, reducing conflicts, enabling off-site prefabrication and keeping the project on track while critical hospital services continued uninterrupted above.
