When Manhattan School District 114 needed a new home for its sixth, seventh and eighth graders, we started from scratch, literally. The new middle school is a greenfield development on a 30-acre site that was formerly an agricultural field, giving the district a clean slate to build a school designed for how students learn today.

The 123,500-square-foot single-story building houses classrooms, a full-size gymnasium, a learning resource center and a commons area. One of the project’s most distinctive features is the music department, which is built within a storm shelter capable of holding the school’s full occupancy in the event of severe weather. Our Virtual Design and Construction team supported the project with building information modeling coordination, including navigating structural and MEP challenges in the field to keep the project on track.
