Decades-old office and lab space got a complete transformation at Northwestern University’s Technological Institute. Over three phases, we converted the existing basement spaces into five state-of-the-art laboratories and science classrooms for the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, supporting the university’s mission to advance knowledge in neurobiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, genetics and cell biology.
The 9,565-square-foot. renovation features floating cloud ceilings, terrazzo flooring and high-end architectural finishes throughout. One of the project’s most distinctive elements is a DNA helix woven into the terrazzo floor, a design our team helped bring to life by collaborating with the architect and terrazzo subcontractor to develop the CAD file that made installation possible.
The project achieved LEED v4 ID+C: Commercial Interiors Gold certification, with 22% less energy used, an 87% construction waste recycling rate and 242 total tons of carbon avoided. All paints, coatings, flooring, ceilings and insulation installed were low-VOC materials.
