Embracing Connection, Care and Community in Racine
Pepper projects move forward efficiently and effectively with established trust and demonstrated commitment to community. For the underserved Lincoln King neighborhood on the north side of Racine, Wisconsin, these qualities are also empowering vital transformation.
The new King-Center, a community and health center named for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and located near Julian Thomas Elementary School, is bringing 85,000 square feet of space for education, health and recreation to this economically and racially diverse area. Approximately 50% larger than the existing center, the net-zero facility offers expanded space for the city’s public health department, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) where residents can receive affordable comprehensive medical, dental and behavioral health sciences services, classrooms, computer labs, a large gymnasium, running track and climbing wall, outdoor sports courts and open lawn space.
Improvements All Around
“We’re building for community well-being on and beyond the construction site,” says Jared McDaniel, Pepper's Project Director. “The improved infrastructure directly impacts the vitality of this community, and our approach helps foster connections that promote a sense of purpose, in addition to anchoring technical and financial success.”
This state-of-the-art community center means residents like Bridget Smith-Phillips now have dependable, affordable access to essential health, wellness and social services, as well as safe, reliable and free places to learn new skills, improve physical fitness and engage in community activities.
Pepper Makes It Personal
Bridget, a local resident, was hired as a Pepper intern after participating in a Racine career fair and has recently joined the team permanently as a Project Engineer. She is energized by the opportunity to develop her expertise and make a direct impact on the future of her family and community.
